I have been very fortunate and blessed to get the opportunity to spend the Summer with my children this year. I am completing some work from home and returning to work again in August when the kids go back to school.
For a full time working mommy, summer break brings with it a little bit of anxiety. I worry about what all we are going to do to fill our time. Oh how I dread the everlasting statement, “I’m bored,” and I fear hearing that on the very first day of vacation.
Yesterday (Monday) we went to the local Library and signed up to participate in their Summer Reading Program. For every 5 hours of reading, the kids will get to claim a prize each time we go back to the Library. Talk about motivation, they can taste that prize already.
Izzy wanted pb&j for lunch and Brae wanted a ham & cheese. I let them watch a movie while we ate lunch. Afterwards they played with some modeling clay and painted a sun catcher.
I may may or may not have stocked up on some stuff at Dollar Tree just to throw at them when they have that glimmer of boredom in their eyes.
They wanted to play with the Curious Chef kit that Braeden had gotten for his birthday last year, so we broke out all of the stuff to make smoothies.
They each put blueberries, strawberries, bananas, orange juice and strawberry syrup in bowls and mixed it before pouring it into the blender.
These turned out great. We each guessed what color we thought the smoothie would end up. I may have won, simply because I’ve made smoothies a couple of times in my life. Izzy told me I cheated 😂
Today (Tuesday) we ate cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Shortly after breakfast they were raring to go. I broke out a craft I had seen on Pinterest. Super simple, but something they really enjoyed.
We created ice cream cones with construction paper, cupcake liners and paint.
They insited I make one too andI obliged.
Afterwards, I insisted we go outside and beat the heat of the day. It was predicted to be about 93 degrees, which without being completely submersed in water the whole time, is pretty torturous. I broke out the kiddie pool which obviously was WAY too small for them.
Definitely time for an upgrade!!!
But they enjoyed using it to fill their water guns.
And we also broke out the sprinkler.
After lunch we hung hung out a little bit and relaxed. We ended up playing Chutes and Ladders, Hide and Seek and making another Smoothie.
We’ve also started our Chore Chart back up again. It seemed to dwindle while school was in session and the kids were home less often. They usually get $.10 for each chore they complete from the list. Making their beds, brushing teeth, helping with dishes, putting clothes away, etc. Usually by the end of the week they each have earned a couple of dollars. They seem super motivated this time, to the point of asking me what they can do next. We will see how long that lasts, but for now I will enjoy being able to walk through their rooms without stepping on something.
This was just a glimpse into our lives. I often wonder what other SAHM days look like. These have been two crazy action packed days. I am feeling it. 9:30 bedtime for me, yes please.
