For Braeden’s First Birthday, I tried to go with a generic theme, since at that age, they really aren’t in to any character or TV show. He wasn’t really into Mickey Mouse, Blue’s Clues or anything boy related. I thought about themes like construction, turtles or just a BLUE party but I figured in the years to come, he might actually think of those himself.
Izzy had gotten a little red wagon for her first birthday, which at the time they both loved to ride around in. So, why not create a party around that? We had just had our yard graded and leveled, and a new playground installed so I decided to BRAVE the party at home idea and also be able to use their real red wagon in the new yard. Now that I look back on it, I wonder WHY in the WORLD I did that.
Look at this picture.
And that’s not everybody.
To top it off – you can’t plan the weather. The newly graded yard decided it wanted to be muddy since it had rained all morning before the party. Thankfully my dad saved the day and brought over several bales of hay. But still – going in and out of the house with muddy hay all over your feet – you can only imagine.
Washing away the pessimist in me; it ended up being a pretty great party. With close quarters, it made for an intimate party where everyone got the chance to meet each other and were kind of forced to talk and get to know each other. It’s pretty great when your own friends and family do that. That’s why my favorite holiday will always be Thanksgiving. Friends and family stuck together at one (or two or three) table/s eating and talking, it doesn’t get much better.
I made a cute little smash cake just for Braeden to go along with his Red Wagon Theme.
It’s a red velvet cake, some ho-ho’s, red hot tamales, black licorice, white icing and LOTS of toothpicks.
And dumped in the middle of the wagon is some of the dirt cake pictured below.
That literally is a BUCKET full of dirt cake. It looks like a lot, but it got wiped out!
And the Birthday Boy loved it too!
